Mixing a homemade rum cosmopolitan by shaking rum, cranberry juice, lemon juice, and simple syrup with ice

Rum Cosmopolitan Cocktail

If you love a classic cosmopolitan but want something slightly softer and more layered, this rum cosmopolitan delivers. White rum brings a light, rounded sweetness that complements cranberry and lime without overpowering them. The result is crisp, balanced, and refreshing.

Equipment

  • 1 Cocktail Shaker
  • Cocktail Glass
  • Large Ice Cubes

Ingredients

For the Cocktail

  • 2 oz White Rum
  • 1 oz Cranberry Juice Unsweetened
  • 1 oz Simple Syrup
  • 1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice 1-2 Lemons
  • 1 Cup Ice for shaking

Garnishes

  • 1 Large Ice Cube
  • 1 Rosemary Sprig Thyme, Sage, and Lavender also work
  • 1 Lemon Round

Salt Sugar Rim

Simple Syrup (If you don't already have some, make this and store the remaining amount, this is enough for 4 cocktails)

  • 1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Water

Instructions

  • Place cocktail glasses in the freezer.
  • Make the simple syrup. In a small microwave safe bowl, combine 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup water. Microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring in-between until the sugar fully dissolves. Let cool completely. This yields about 1/2 cup simple syrup, enough for four cocktails.
  • Juice the lemons. Squeeze fresh lemons until you have 1 ounce of juice per cocktail. Strain to remove pulp and seeds. Slice one thin lemon round per cocktail and set aside for garnish.
  • Prepare the rim mixture. On a small plate, mix 1 tablespoon granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon of kosher salt. Set aside.
  • Shake the cocktail. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. For one cocktail, add:2 ounces white rum, 1 ounce cranberry juice, 1 ounce simple syrup, 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
Shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds, until well chilled and condensation appears on the outside of the shaker.
  • Lightly brush the rim of each chilled glass with lemon juice or simple syrup, then dip into the sugar salt mixture.
Add a large ice cube or fill 3/4 of the way with whichever ice you have on hand.
Pour cocktail into the prepared glass and top with a lemon round and sprig of rosemary.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Batch if needed. You can shake up to two cocktails at a time by doubling the measurements. For four cocktails, either shake two double batches or combine all ingredients in a large pitcher with ice, stir well, and strain into glasses immediately.
