Rum Cosmopolitan with Lemon and Salt Sugar Rim (Gluten Free and Dairy Free)

This rum cosmopolitan is a bright, citrus forward cocktail made with white rum, cranberry juice, fresh lemon juice, a little simple syrup, and a salt sugar rim. It keeps the clean structure of the classic cosmo but swaps vodka for rum, adding subtle sweetness and extra zing from the salt. Naturally gluten free and dairy free, this recipe is great for hosting those with food intolerances.

Tips on how to make this gluten-free dairy-free Rum Cosmopolitan:

  • Use chilled glasses. It sounds tedious, but doing so makes a real difference. Pop your coupe, martini glasses, or your favorite cocktail glass in the freezer for at least 20 minutes before you start. A colder glass keeps the drink crisp and slows dilution, which helps preserve balance and aroma.
  • Choose a good white rum. Since this recipe has just a few ingredients, the rum really shows through. Distilled spirits are considered gluten free because distillation removes gluten proteins, even if the base ingredient originally contained gluten.
  • Use unsweetened cranberry juice. It gives you that clean, tart flavor without extra sugar. Cranberries are rich in polyphenols that contribute to both flavor and antioxidant properties.
  • Always use fresh lemon juice. This is non negotiable. Freshly squeezed lemon juice gives brightness and natural citrus oils that bottled juice simply cannot replicate. Citrus aroma compounds such as limonene are volatile and degrade during storage, which reduces freshness and complexity
  • Top the beverage with a sprig of fresh herbs. This step also sounds extra, but the green adds a nice contrast in color alongside the pretty pink cocktail. Think of using rosemary, sage, or even a sprig of lavender.
  • Do not skip the salt sugar rim. It is what makes this cocktail feel balanced rather than sharply sour. Salt enhances perceived sweetness and suppresses bitterness, which shifts how acidity is experienced.
  • This recipe provides the measurements for 1 cocktail, but if you plan to make them for a group, you can always batch the recipe and shake upon serving.

How to make a rum cosmopolitan cocktail:

There are three main steps to this gluten free dairy free Rum Cosmopolitan: prep, mixing, and assembly. Breaking it down keeps everything organized and makes it easy whether you are making one cocktail or batching for friends.

Prep

Start by making your simple syrup if needed. For one cocktail, you will use 1 ounce simple syrup. For four cocktails, you will need 4 ounces total, which equals 1/2 cup. To make exactly enough for four drinks, combine 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat gently until the sugar fully dissolves, then let it cool completely. If you would rather have extra on hand, you can make 1/2 cup sugar with 1/2 cup water. That will yield about 1 cup of simple syrup, enough for eight cocktails.

Next, juice your fresh lemons. As you juice, slice one thin lemon round per cocktail and set aside for garnish. Strain the lemon juice into a small container to remove pulp and seeds. Fresh lemon juice is key for a clean, bright flavor.

Place your cocktail glasses in the freezer for at least 20 minutes. A chilled glass keeps the drink crisp and balanced.

Measure out your rum and cranberry juice and have plenty of ice ready so everything is within reach.

Mixing

For one cocktail, add the following to a shaker filled with ice:

2 ounces white rum
1 ounce cranberry juice
1 ounce simple syrup
1 ounce freshly squeezed and strained lemon juice

Shake for 15 to 20 seconds, until the shaker feels very cold.

You can shake up to two cocktails at a time by doubling the measurements. If you are making four cocktails, I like to work in two rounds of double batches, or measure the full batch into a pitcher with ice, stir well, and strain into glasses when ready to serve.

Assembly

Remove your chilled glasses from the freezer. On a small plate, mix sugar and fine sea salt. Lightly brush the rim of each glass with lemon juice or simple syrup, then dip into the salt and sugar mixture.

Add a large, clear ice cube if desired. Pour the cocktail into each prepared glass and garnish with a fresh lemon round. Serve immediately.

This Rum Cosmopolitan is bright, balanced, and just sweet enough, with that subtle sweet and salty edge that makes it feel special but still completely doable at home.

If you love a classic cosmopolitan but want something slightly softer and more layered, this rum cosmopolitan delivers. White rum brings a light, rounded sweetness that complements cranberry and lime without overpowering them. The result is crisp, balanced, and refreshing.
